Ombre hair isn’t nearly as popular as it used it used to be (which may be a good thing–specifically, the look of dark brown hair transitioning into copper ends? Not so awesome). However, ombre dye is still super-hot and surprisingly easy to do. Whether it’s bed sheets, curtains, or your own clothes, ombre dye looks beautiful and on-trend. Our newest favorite item to dip-dye? Tote bags! With spring (hopefully) upon us, this DIY project will make a bright, bold statement that will have your friends lined up for your crafty services.
- Canvas tote bag
- 1/3 cup soda ash
- 3 gallons of water
- Plastic basin
- Tulip One Step Tie-Dye Kit
- 8-oz cup of water
- Large industrial paint brush
- Professional textile detergent
- Plastic gloves for protection
1. First, you want to start off with a canvas tote bag, which can be purchased at a craft store like Michaels. This 3-pack is perfect for you and your two closest friends!
2. Next, soak the tote bag in a mixture of 1/3 cup soda ash and 3 gallons of water in a plastic basin for 30 minutes. Soda ash helps bind the dye to the fibers of the fabric better.
3. Wring out the water from the tote bag so that it is just damp, and lay the bag on a flat surface.
4. Choose any one of the pre-mixed bottles of dye from the dye kit and dispense in a straight, thick line all across the bottom of the tote (about 2 inches wide). Be sure to wear your gloves while doing so!
5. Immediately dip the paint brush into the cup of water and begin brushing the dye up the bag. As you get about halfway up the bag, dilute the water on the brush further by continually dipping into the water cup so that the last section of dye is rather light. You can continue the dye all the way to the top of the bag, but we recommend leaving at least 1/4 of the canvas visible.
6. Let dry overnight, and wash in professional textile detergent by (gloved) hand in a plastic basin the next day. Do not wash in your washing machine, especially with other clothes, until the initial wash is complet
